Letter from the President
Dear Lakeview Residents,
I would like to take the opportunity to update you on the progress of
the 3rd District and the
LCPD Officers. I personally thank LCPD Commander, Sergeant Doug Eckert
who has
been working very hard on our behalf. We have to commend them on their
efforts. Since
the inception of the LCPD in 1998 with reported crimes numbering 626,
the reported
crimes have gone down significantly to a 2009 total of 226. Please refer
to LCPD Commander
Doug Eckert’s article below.
We need to help our law enforcement personnel in preventing crime. Here
are some of the
things that we can do that will definitely help:
Lock your car and do not leave anything of value in view.
Lock your outdoor shed and place all yard equipment, tools, and other
belongings
inside.
Install peripheral lighting around your home. This can be flood
lights that come on
with a timer or those that have motion detectors.
Install a video camera system that places several lenses on the
outside of your
home in places where they can capture activity.
Install an alarm system and have it monitored. If you have an alarm
system, use
it. Not only does it keep you safe, it also protects you regarding your
insurance
policy. Many policies will not support a break in or a fire at your home
if you own
a security system and it was not set when the crime/fire took place.
Trim all large bushes that may interfere with your view from your
door and windows.
These are also good places for perpetrators to hide out.
When you exit or enter your home, be aware of your surroundings.
Check all
around you before you leave your home and/or vehicle.
Be a good citizen. If you see anything that does not look right, it
probably isn’t. If
you see criminal activity in Lakeview, call 9-1-1 immediately. If you
are suspect of
criminal activity, or if you need help or guidance, call 821-2222. It is
critically
important to report anything suspicious.
There are three websites that are very helpful in keeping up-to-date
with crime trends. The
LCPD website address is:
http://www.lcpdonline.com/ The Orleans Parish Criminal
Sheriff’s website address is:
http://www.opcso.org/ In addition, the Citizen Crime Watch
page is also a very useful tool:
http://citizencrimewatch.org These sites continue to add
updated information and are interactive. I encourage you to check the
sites frequently.
The LCPD board meets at 6 p.m. on the fourth Thursday of every month,
with the exception
of July and December, at the St. Dominic Rectory. Please join us.
Sincerely,
Charles P. Ciaccio, President
Lakeview Crime Prevention District
From the LCPD
Commander
2010 has been a difficult year in terms of crime for the Lakeview area.
Each month this year, from January through and including June, there has
been
an increase in crime compared to the same months for 2009. The main
areas
of concern are in property crimes, e.g. burglaries, automobile
burglaries, thefts,
and automobile thefts. I look at crimes committed within Lakeview on a
daily
basis, but also look at areas that closely border Lakeview, including
those in
Jefferson Parish. I study the crime maps and crime trends day to day and
I
look at weekly as well as monthly patterns.
With the increase of these crimes in mind, it is necessary for me to
change some of my tactics as they relate to deployment of officers,
adding
manpower in some time slots and possibly decreasing manpower in time
slots
that may not need as much presence. I assure you that I will continue to
make
changes on my end and will accept any innovative ideas that will assist
in
keeping Lakeview the safest place to live. As for crime prevention and
while I
am committed to do my part, I am asking you to do your part as many of
you
already do. I am urging you to get involved in one, if not the most,
important
issues we are facing - crime. I am asking you to really get involved!
Get
involved with me and the Lakeview Crime Prevention District. One way to
become more involved and understand how the LCPD works is by attending
the monthly LCPD meetings. Since I have been given the privilege of
working
for you, I have noticed that the attendance for the LCPD meetings by the
community has been very light, but mostly no attendance at all.
I encourage everyone that has a vested interest in Lakeview to attend
these meetings! Another way to really get involved with the reduction of
crime
in Lakeview is through the “Neighborhood Watch” program. It is a great
way
of networking with your immediate neighbors for the sake of telling
criminals
that you are watching! This program will prepare you in when to call the
police,
what to look for, how to react, how to prevent you from becoming a
victim, and
many others ways to gain knowledge of how to keep safe. If anyone is
interested
in starting or learning more about “Neighborhood Watch” please contact
me at (504) 258-2391, or by email, deckert@cityofno.com.
Also, if you would like to meet with me one on one, I am available! I’ll
meet
with you at your residence or business and discuss any strategies needed
to
make you as safe as you can possibly be. I’ll advise you on exterior
lighting,
alarms, what to report, when to report, what you should leave in your
automobile
or on your front lawns, fencing, or whatever you would like discuss. You
can learn from me, but more importantly, I can learn from you!
If you have any thoughts on how I, or we as a team, can make
Lakeview safer through the Lakeview Crime Prevention District, I would
like
to hear from you. Please call me at (504) 258-2391, or by email,
deckert@cityofno.com. I am interested in your thoughts and opinions for
any
practical changes that you would like to see.
Respectfully,
Sgt. Doug Eckert
LCPD Patrols
Recently we had a brave and smart Lakeview resident call in an
Auto Burglary in progress to the police. This victim of crime gave a
great description of the perpetrator and the LCPD Police were first
on the scene in less than one minute. The NOPD 3rd District Police
were right there behind them. This took place at 1:00 a.m. in the
morning, when most of us were sound asleep. The perpetrator was
apprehended on the spot; he didn’t have a chance to run. I went to
the block and much to my surprise, the majority of the cars that were
burglarized were left unlocked.
There is a reason for reducing crime in Lakeview - your family,
your investment in property, and great neighbors - just to name a
few. If you make it easy for criminals by not practicing safety 24
hours per day, 7 days per week, we will never realize our goals.
